3. The application error log file "ARKWEErrorLog.Log" is gradually increasing in size. Can I delete it?

Yes, you may delete this error log file. ARKWE generates an error log file in the application path "C:\Program files\ARKWE 7.x". The error log file tends to increase in size over a period of time especially if the application meets with frequent error conditions. The application does an "append" to the error log each time it runs. This is required for diagnostic purposes during trouble shooting. You may delete the error log file periodically.

4.

What user credentials does ARKWE use to connect to a domain/server?

By default, ARKWE uses the currently logged on user context to connect to a domain/server. If ARKWE determines that the currently logged on user does not have sufficient permissions on the specified server, a ‘Enter Network Password’ dialog appears allowing the user to enter user credentials to connect to the server. ARKWE then establishes a session with the destination domain/server, using the user credentials specified.

5.

What permissions or privileges are required to view information about a Windows server on the network?

To view information about a Windows Server on the network, the currently logged on user or the user credentials specified must:

  1. be a valid domain user to view basic information

  2. be a member in the Administrators group of the target server to view privileges, services and system resources

  3. have rights to read the registry settings for viewing event log, installed applications, policies, and system resources.

7.

Why is Version number,Publisher,Readme and Path fields missing in some of the Installed applications in the 'Applications Installed' Report?

ARKWE uses the Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Uninstall key to enumerate the list of installed applications. The Display name, Version number, Publisher, Readme and the InstallLocation are taken from this Uninstall subkey. For various reasons, the version number, Publisher, Readme and the InstallLocation may not be set by the applications when they are getting installed. In such cases these are reported as Empty column values in ARKWE.

Similarly, the Installation date is reported using the date of the registry entry under the Uninstall key.

Why do I get "RPC server unavailable" error while running System Info reports?

The System Info feature uses WMI to collect report data. WMI is affected by Windows Firewall which blocks unsolicited incoming traffic. To resolve this issue, ensure that Remote Administration permission is enabled in the Domain Group Policy. To enable Remote Administration permission in the Domain Group Policy follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Open the appropriate Domain Group Policy Object enabled for the domain in the Group Policy Object Editor.

  2. Navigate to the "Domain Profile" node. The "Domain Profile" node is under "Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Network->Network Connections->Windows Firewall". Please note that the Group Policy Object Editor for Windows 2000 does not have the required templates to edit Windows Firewall settings, thus the Domain GPO has to be edited in Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP or Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer.

  3. Edit the setting "Windows Firewall: Allow Remote Administration Exception".  (Incase of Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista ,Windows 7 :" Windows Firewall: Allow Inbound Remote Administration Exception" )

  4. Click on "Enabled" in the property page to enable the setting

  5. Enter "localsubnet" (without the quotes) in the edit box under "Allow unsolicited incoming messages from:"

  6. Click OK to apply the setting

  7. Please note that changes to Group Policies will not take effect immediately; the default update interval is 90 minutes on domain members and 5 minutes on domain controllers. However, you can make the changes take immediate effect using the command-line Group Policy Update Utility - Secedit.exe in Windows 2000 or Gpupdate.exe in Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista or Windows 7. For information on Secedit.exe visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/227448/ . For more information on Gpupdate.exe visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298444

I need to scan the entire domain to collect system information using System Info feature. What preparatory steps do I need to perform before I generate System Info reports?

The System Info feature uses WMI to collect report data. Before you generate System Info reports for a domain, please ensure the following settings are set appropriately:

  • Remote Administration setting is enabled on Windows Firewall. By default, Windows Firewall blocks all unsolicited incoming traffic except for Group Policy. This is a common issue you might encounter while generating System Info reports. To resolve this issue, you need to enable the remote administration setting on the Firewall. For more information see FAQ #16. For more information about configuring the Windows Firewall connections with a script, see Microsoft Article.

  • WMI is installed and the Startup Type for WMI service is set to Automatic and the service is running under Local System Account.

  • DCOM is enabled and ensure that security settings for DCOM allow remote connections

  1. Run the DCOM Configuration Utility (dcomcnfg.exe)

  2. In the Component Services dialog box, expand Component Services, expand Computers, and then right-click My Computer and click Properties

  3. In the My Computer Properties dialog box, click the Default Properties tab

  4. Select Enable Distributed COM on this computer

  5. The Default Authentication Level is set to Connect and the Default Impersonation Level is set to Identify in Windows XP and later operating systems. For Windows NT, however, the Default Authentication Level is set to Connect and Default Impersonation Level is set to Impersonate

  6. The default DCOM security settings for Access Permissions and Launch and Activation Permissions in the COM Security tab in the My Computer Properties dialog includes at least INTERACTIVE, SYSTEM and Administrators

  • In Windows XP SP2 and later operating systems the SERVICE account is granted Impersonate a client after authentication right under User Rights Assignment under Local Policies

  • The Data Execution Prevention in Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 SP1 is enabled for essential windows programs only

What does the content "Inherited from:" in List of effective permissions for users and groups on folders or files the reports refer to ?

The list of groups in which the user is directly or indirectly (nested) member of are reported in ‘Type (Inherited & Explicit)’ field after "Inherited from: " text in the effective permissions report. Effective permission is resultant permission that is calculated using the permissions that are set explicitly and inherited by way of user membership in groups.

Consider a user named ‘John’ reported under ‘User/Group Name’ field with the following values for ‘Type (Inherited & Explicit)’ field:

Example 1: "Inherited from: pathfinder\administration” denotes that the user is a member of ‘administration’ group directly.

Example 2: "Inherited from: pathfinder\research -> pathfinder\design -> pathfinder\development" denotes that the user is indirect member of "research" by means of nested group design and development.

Why do I get the message "The specified domain does not exist. Specify a valid domain name." while adding/editing/connecting to a domain?

When the enumeration settings option is set to 'Use ADSI'. ARKWE uses ADSI for enumerating servers present in a domain. During this process, ARKWE tries to connect to the Active Directory Server (Domain Controller) of the specified domain internally. If ARKWE is unable to find the domain controller for the selected domain, it will display the corresponding message. The following may be one of the reasons for such scenario:

  1. The domain controller for the domain that you have selected may have been switched off.

  2. The domain that you have selected may have been removed and still remains in cache.
